Abstract	The history of the Noncommissioned officer (NCO) in the U.S. Army is long and diverse. It provides a unique understanding of where we have been and where we are going. Our history is a tradition full of significant contributions that have shaped the world as we see it today and with it comes the pride of wearing the prestigious rank. The history of the sergeant major extends back to the earliest days of the Army of the United States, but the role that we currently associate with the sergeant major of today is relatively young. Only through continued refinement of its position and duties by forward-thinking leaders, commanders, and noncommissioned officers has the rank of sergeant major been elevated to its prestigious position. The Army noncommissioned officer was first described as the backbone of the Army by Rudyard Kipling, and since the origins of the United States Army, the sergeant major has been recognized as the head of the noncommissioned officer ranks. The long history of the sergeant major can be traced back to the fifteenth century with duties very similar to the sergeant major of today, specifically in the supervision of the regiment's noncommissioned officers.
